About  ~  Our Achievements  ~  Contact Us  ~  Julius' Story

Treating people living with HIV virus will offer us hope and by offering hope we dispel the notion that AIDS spells doom. Treatment has irreversibly broken the equation between AIDS and death, it allows us to begin to undo the social stigmas and phobias that make prevention so difficult to discuss and practice, hence we announce to all, “Treat the people NOW!”

About GATAG

The Ghana AIDS Treatment Access Group (GATAG) is a coalition of 15 strong people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) and allies (Civil Society Organisations and Human right activists) registered as a Non-Profit Organisation with REG.: No. G12, 316 under the Laws Guiding Organisations Limited By Guarantee, in the Republic of Ghana.

The AIDS epidemic has exposed many of the problems facing Africa, including poverty, socio-economic and genders inequality, inadequate health-care infrastructures and poor governance. We insist that access to ARV therapy is not only an ethical imperative, but will also strengthen prevention efforts, increase uptake of voluntary counseling and testing, reduce the incidence of opportunistic infections, and reduce the burden of HIV/AIDS-including the number of orphans-on families, communities, and economies.

HIV/AIDS has in the last decade, assumed such an alarming rate of growth in numbers for the virile populations of Africa including Ghana that any responsible government which ignores it does so at its own peril. It is a fact that development plans and programmes must take into account the HIV/AIDS factor and how to combat it.

In partnership with other civil society organizations, efforts are being made to tackle the problem, first by containing the rate of spread of the virus through education and awareness creation and secondly by dealing with the unfortunate members of society who have already contracted the virus, caring for them and helping them to seek treatment.

All legitimate members of GATAG have a contractual agreement with GATAG to volunteer to work hard as advocates for treatment access in Ghana. The first of its kind in this country. The records of their membership can be examined by all interested persons, these registration were completed as far back as 26th August 2002 as a follow up to the Lunching of the Pan-African HIV/AIDS Treatment Access movement “PATAM” in Cape Town, South Africa from the 22 – 24 August 2002. Mission Statement

Treating people living with HIV virus will offer us hope and by offering hope we dispel the notion that AIDS spells doom. Treatment has irreversibly broken the equation between AIDS and death, it allows us to begin to undo the social stigmas and phobias that make prevention so difficult to talk about frankly and to practice effectively, hence we announce to all “Treat the people NOW!”

The Objectives of GATAG

  1. To support one another socially and psychologically (through support group meetings)

  2. Protect our legitimate interests and advocate for the human rights of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs)

  3. To advocate for access and availability of antiretroviral treatment and diagnostics.

  4. Discourage stigmatization and isolation of PLWHAs.

  5. To curb the spread of HIV infection by offering education on preventive behavioral lifestyle and instilling a sense of responsibility in ourselves to avoid re-infecting ourselves and others.

  6. Willingly to work with civil society support organizations on the fight against HIV/AIDS and stigmatization.

  7. Developing contacts and sharing experiences with national and international AIDS organizations through networking experience.

The story of GATAG will not be complete without telling the story of how this network was born.  To do this we must also mention Mother Africa and Child Care Organisation (MACCO) as the initial organization that sponsored the formation of GATAG from the global days of actions organized to the final registration of GATAG in October 2003. Here is (MACCO’s) story
