On the 9th of October
2002, GATAG mobilized its members in the global day of action against the
International Community, a mass movement of people on a peaceful procession
for the Global Day of Action for more funding for Global Fund to fight AIDS,
TB and Malaria report on Peace FM, Vibe FM, Unique FM, Radio 2 FM, Choice
FM, TV3. The Global Funds needs US$7 – 10 billion each year to fight
HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria in resource - poor countries, so GATAG joined the
global access campaign in a petition the wealthy nations in a letter
entitled “Global Funds Needs your help”, this letter was circulated and
received by all media houses, diplomatic missions and Ministry of foreign
affairs.
On the 17th of October 2002, GATAG had a fierce encounter with Coca Cola
Bottling Company in Ghana, over their workplace policies of people living
with HIV/AIDS on the Global Day of Action against Coca Cola International,
AIDS activist worldwide fought by all means possible to free the Ghanaian
AIDS Activist who was detained at the Police Headquarters on the false
charges of trying to vandalize Coca Cola’s bottling plant in Ghana. After
much intimidation from the police forcing our truck that was ready for a
peaceful procession to deliver a letter (urging this multi-national company
to come up with a good workplace policy to treat its workforce in Africa
that are HIV positive) to the Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O) of Coca Cola
International U.S.A, through the management of Coca Cola Ghana. GATAG
finally resorted to organising a press release on Global Action encouraging
Coca-Cola to come up with comprehensive work place policies for treating
their staff on Friday 25th October 2002 at the International Press Centre,
this was reported on The Statesman of 28th October 2003.
The founder of GATAG was actively involved in the organization of the first
International Treatment Preparedness Summit (ITPS) sponsored by The World
Bank, World Health Organization, Joint United Nation Action against AIDS,
USAIDS, Catholic Medical Board, Tide Foundation and others, and was later
made the African Focal Person to lead the 38 African delegates to the summit
held in Cape town – South Africa between 11th – 13th March, 2003 report on a
Los Angeles – U.S.A magazine called KUJISOURCE on the May – June issue of
the magazine page 6.
On the 24th of April 2003, GATAG stood by Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) of
South Africa, on the Global Day of Action against the government of Mr.
Thambo Mbeki, for his refusal to implement the national treatment plan that
would have saved millions of lives and the senseless deaths of 600 people
living with AIDS in South Africa.
On the 15th of May 2003 GATAG was featured on The Breakfast Show, The
Producer of the Show facilitated the programme, shown on GTV, where we
Advocated on treatment access and difficulties facing the group in terms of
financing.
GATAG participated on the National AIDS Control Programme, PharmAccess
International and Family Health International, training workshop for Doctors
in Ghana, we were invited to speak on behalf of People living with and
affected by HIV/AIDS (PLWAs), Topic: Stigmatisation and Discrimination of
PLWAs in Ghana.
GATAG reacted at the Government’s announcement of the ordering of
Antiretroviral drugs for 2000 people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWAs), advising
the NACP and government to also involved informed PLWAs in making the
decisions that affect them, this story was reported on the Lovewise magazine
of August 2003.
GATAG was instrumental in the organising of the core members of Men who
Sleep with Men (MSM), Women who Sleep with Women and the bisexuals group in
Ghana known as the (GBLT Group). As a matter of fact, they find GATAG
office the safest place to hold their meetings, from the intimidation and
abuse from the public.
GATAG have finished the preparation of a comprehensive 5 years project
proposal for awareness campaign, treatment education and counseling of
PLWAs, the programme targets treatment of our workers in private corporate
companies who need treatment of their employees infected by HIV/AIDS, with
collaboration with PharmAccess International - Netherlands, plans are far
advanced to set-up 15 Accredited Treatment Centres (ATCs) in all the 10
regions of Ghana, for this purpose. |
